As the new WNBA season approaches, the Indiana Fever and its star player Caitlin Clark have clearly cemented themselves as fan favorites. The team’s opening match will see it challenge Connecticut Sun in a highly-anticipated game.
As reported by the Associated Press, the Fever is now the biggest liability at BetMGM, commanding almost half of the wagers.
In terms of money wagered, Indiana Fever is second only to the Las Vegas Aces, the WNBA’s two-time champion. Whereas the Aces are responsible for 41.5% of the money wagered, the Fever has attracted 29% of all money bet on the WNBA.
As a result, the Fever’s odds to win the championship went from $2500 to +1800. The AP report added that Las Vegas edged from a +115 favorite to even money.
Seamus Magee, sportsbook trading manager at BetMGM, commented on the matter, attributing the spike in Fever wagers on Caitlin Clark. He noted that the Fever’s games are likely to be the most bet on during the 2024 WNBA season. Additionally, Magee believes that Clark’s player props will resonate with punters.
The report also noted that the situation is similar at Caesars Sportsbooks where Indiana Fever tied with Connecticut Sun with the fourth-best odds at 15-1.
Caesars Sportsbook fans, meanwhile, expect the Aces, New York Liberty and the Seattle Storm to win the title at +100, +240 and +800 respectively.
David Lieberman, Caesars basketball oddsmaker, added that his team is feeling the hype around Clark and is expecting an overall increase in betting handle.
Clark Is Poised to Win the MVP Award
Speaking of Clark, the player is currently one of the favorites to win the MVP award. Commanding a whopping 68% of the MVP wagers at BetMGM and ranking third in the MVP odds at Caesars, Clark is sure to drive extra betting volume.
Other favorites to win the MVP award, for context, include Las Vegas’ A’ja Wilson and New York’s Brenna Stewart.
The AP report concluded that there is almost no betting value on Clark to win Rookie of the Year.
