EL Names Industry Heavyweight Baeveghem as Secretary General
The EL described him as a recognized leader in strategy, governance and regulatory affairs

The European Lotteries, the European umbrella organization of national lotteries operating games of chance, including sports betting, announced the appointment of a new secretary general. The appointee is set to step into the office later this year and continue to grow and strengthen the organization’s unique societal mission.
EL Names a New Secretary General
According to the announcement, the EL Executive Committee has selected lottery veteran Piet Van Baeveghem as the organization’s new secretary general. The appointee has served the lottery sector for almost 15 years and has the experience needed to continue the EL’s mission.
Baeveghem, who has spent a significant part of his career as a member of Belgium’s National Lottery, is no stranger to the EL. In his positions at the Belgian lottery operator, he has been “deeply engaged” with the EL for many years.
Baeveghem joined the Belgian National Lottery in 2010, initially serving as its senior public affairs adviser. In March 2013, he was promoted to domain manager of legal and regulatory affairs – a position he has held since.
Baeveghem Is No Stranger to EL
The appointee has likewise held positions at the European Lotteries and has served the association as executive chair of the EL Legal & Regulatory Working Group, but also in various other capacities.
In addition to that, he holds a Master’s degree in Law from Ghent University. The EL described him as a “recognized leader in strategy, governance and regulatory affairs.
As someone this profoundly familiar with the lottery sector and the EL’s mission, Baeveghem was deemed to be perfect for the position of secretary general.
An experienced team leader, he brings over 25 years of expertise in policy-making and stakeholder engagement, making him a valuable addition to the EL team.
European Lotteries statement
The association added that Baeveghem will step into the office on July 1, 2025.
European Lotteries Champions Sustainable Gaming
Last year, the EL released its new manifesto, promoting sustainability and safer gaming among its members. In its manifesto, the association recognized the rapid changes affecting the lottery and gaming sectors and promoted accountability among European lottery stakeholders.
The EL called on lottery companies to continue the long tradition of contributing to the public good and retaining their unique place in gaming and society as a whole.
In more recent news, the European Lotteries certified IGT’s Italian subsidiary, IGT Lottery, for the sixth time in a row. As part of this process, the company also secured the WLA Responsible Gaming Certification.
In its official release, IGT said that the certification highlights its commitment to the highest industry standards and its desire to prioritize its customers’ safety.
