Elaine Wynn, Trailblazing Business Leader and Generous Giver, Dies at 82
Elaine Wynn, originally from New York, co-founded Mirage Resorts in 1976 alongside her then-husband, Steve Wynn

Elaine Wynn, who played a key role in making Las Vegas what it is today, died on April 15, 2025, at 82 years old. She made her mark on the gambling world and gave back to society in big ways. People will always link Wynn’s name to how Las Vegas grew and changed over the years.
Elaine Wynn Pioneers Mirage Resorts and Champions Education and Arts
Elaine Wynn, a New Yorker by birth, started Mirage Resorts with Steve Wynn, her husband at the time, in 1976. Their company brought new ideas to the table, like The Mirage, which opened its doors in 1989 and changed how people saw fancy casinos. This big win led to the birth of Wynn Resorts, a top player in the world of hospitality. They now own some of the best-known spots on the Las Vegas Strip, including the Bellagio, Wynn, and Encore resorts.
Elaine Wynn‘s impact reached far beyond the world of casinos. She had a strong commitment to charity work in education and the arts. Throughout her life, she backed efforts to make public schools better in Nevada. She took on leadership roles there heading up the Nevada State Board of Education and co-leading the Blue Ribbon Education Reform Task Force. Her push for change helped shape school reforms across the state.
What is more, Wynn’s love for the arts drove her to become a key backer of cultural groups, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). Her recent reveal of plans to help set up the Las Vegas Museum of Art with LACMA showed her dedication to promoting artistic expression and making art more accessible.
Elaine Wynn Leaves a Lasting Legacy in Las Vegas
On top of that, Wynn championed the cause of the less fortunate children. She started Communities In Schools of Nevada, a group that aims to provide resources to students in need, and led the national board as chair for many years.
Even with the ups and downs in her personal life her rocky marriage and later split from Steve Wynn, people looked up to Elaine for her work ethic, how she led, and what she did for the community. People appreciated her kindness and how she always tried to fix problems, which made both her coworkers and people in the community fond of her.
The Elaine P. Wynn & Family Foundation said she was a trailblazer who “set the standard” for what Vegas is like today, and her work still shapes how the city grows. When she passed away, people from all walks of life – business, politics, and charity work – spoke up to honor her memory.
Elaine Wynn leaves behind her two daughters Kevyn and Gillian, and seven grandchildren. People will remember her as a central player in Las Vegas’ growth and as a big-hearted giver whose efforts will keep motivating generations to come.
