The leading French lottery operator, Française des Jeux (FDJ), continues to expand its presence in the country after completing a major acquisition. The company has announced it finalized the takeover of the leading online horse racing and sports betting operator, ZEturf group. FDJ confirmed it finalized the acquisition of the operator in a deal with a €175 million ($184.3 million) price tag.
The finalization of the acquisition comes after approval from the Competition Authority in France dating back to September 15, 2023. Thanks to this major takeover, FDJ will significantly strengthen its position within the competitive online gambling sector in the country.
The takeover designates the leading lottery operator as the fourth company within the iGaming sector in France with a market share of more than 10%. Currently, the online gambling sector in the country offers online poker, horse racing, as well as sports betting services.
Undoubtedly, the acquisition of ZEturf group would bring benefits for FDJ, considering the operator holds approximately 20% of the market share in France. Ultimately, the takeover is expected to boost FDJ’s position within the regulated gambling sector in the country, allowing it to reach new customers.
The Acquisition Will Strengthen FDJ’s Position in the Market
Stéphane Pallez, FDJ’s chairman and CEO, spoke about the importance of the acquisition of ZEturf for the company. She explained that this strategic takeover would help propel FDJ’s position within the highly competitive French iGaming sector. Finally, Pallez pointed out: “After the launch of a poker activity, our entry into the world of online horse racing betting completes the diversification of our online offering, and reinforces the growth prospects of the FDJ group in compliance with its responsible gaming model.”
“The acquisition of ZEturf opens a new chapter for La Française des Jeux and strengthens our position in the French competitive online games market.“

ZEturf group was founded more than a decade ago, back in 2001. Currently, the company operates under the ZEbet brand, offering horse racing and sports betting services. Constantly growing, the ZEbet brand has seen €50 million ($52.7 million) in turnover for last year. The brand is renowned for its supreme services and strong market presence, which is only expected to grow considering the latest acquisition.
Back in July, FDJ announced it made progress on its plans to acquire Premier Lotteries Ireland (PLI), the operator of the Irish National Lottery. That takeover marks an important milestone for the company in its expansion into the gambling sector in Ireland.
