Florida is now looking to introduce additional safeguards and ensure that consumers are protected from gambling-related harm at a time when chatter about the potential legalization of more gambling verticals is intensifying.

Florida Begins Call for Information Process to Pick RG Vendor

With Florida already offering sports betting through the Hard Rock Bet brand, the Florida Gaming Control Commission wants to find a vendor that can wield the resources and services necessary to provide help to people who are addicted to gambling, but similarly focus on preventing gambling-related harm in the first place.

The FGCC has released a public statement in which the regulator said that it is now looking to ensure that Floridians and visitors can enjoy legal gaming and sports betting while also having access to the necessary resources to ensure that they do not engage in reckless spending or develop a problematic relationship with the hobby in the first place.

“My fellow commissioners and I look forward to the results of this process and to provide progressive resources and scalable services in Florida that will have a clear impact,” said FGCC vice chair Julie I. Brown.

Once a vendor has been selected, the party tasked with overseeing responsible gambling in the state would then have to design an advertising program to encourage responsible gambling practices, as well as set up helpline resources, and other materials that can play a decisive role in helping to shield patrons from harm.

Evolving Nature of Gambling Landscape Demands Stronger RG Measures

FGCC executive director Lou Trombetta said that as the legal betting and gaming landscape in the state evolves, the regulator has become increasingly aware of the need to have adaptable solutions that help address potential gambling-related harm.

The role of the black market is also not to be underestimated as it contributes to pernicious effects on consumers, Trombetta explained. Tombetta added:

“As the landscape of legal gaming and sports betting evolves in Florida, as well as illegal gambling facilities and sites, we recognize the need to have adaptable solutions and expansive options as part of our Compulsive or Addictive Gambling Prevention Program.”

Ultimately, any use of FGCC’s problem gambling and responsible gambling resources ought to be utilized in such a way that they reach a diverse range of demographics and help people who are vulnerable and need help.
