A seasonal fruit trader was recently charged over alleged theft from Genting Highlands Berhad dating back to October this year. The case involved a 45-year-old man with the initials L.K.K., who was accused of breaking into a casino belonging to the company and stealing chips, The Star reports.
The suspect faced charges along with three other individuals who were previously accused of participating in the robbery. The Magistrate’s Court in Raub heard earlier this week that the 45-year-old man allegedly broke into Sky Casino Genting Highland’s casino room and stole 1,160 chips.
The estimated cost of the stolen goods is RM 4.6 million ($977,200). Earlier this week, the 45-year-old suspect pleaded not guilty to the charges. The other three men who were also accused of participating in the robbery pleaded not guilty already in November.
The theft dates back to October 28, 2023. In the early morning hours of that day, several suspects broke into the casino room and stole the aforementioned number of chips. It is unclear whether or not the people suspected of the robbery were able to subsequently exchange the chips for cash.
The latest report doesn’t disclose whether or not there are other suspects who may have been involved in the robbery but are still at large. It is yet to be confirmed what was the role of each suspect.
Bail Is Set, Trial Continues in July
The Deputy Public Prosecutor, Muhammad Zamharir Muhammad Zuhid, insisted on a bail of RM15,000 ($3,200) together with one surety for the 45-year-old suspect.
However, the suspect’s defense lawyer, Dinesh Muthal, asked for a bail that is lower. Defending his client, he said the accused doesn’t have a stable income considering that he sells durian. Moreover, Muthal highlighted that his 45-year-old client is currently helping his 70-year-old mother.
In the end, the Magistrate’s Court’s judge decided to enforce bail for the suspect at RM 10,000 ($2,120) together with one surety. The suspect is set to appear on July 26 for the next motion in the criminal case.
