Judge Rejects Anonymity Request in Mega Millions Lawsuit
The $1.35b jackpot became the epicenter of family drama, pitting the still-anonymous winner against his ex and demonstrating the downsides that can come with sudden wealth

In a dramatic turn of events, the anonymous winner of Maine’s $1.35 billion Mega Millions jackpot could be forced to reveal his identity. A federal judge has denied the man’s request to hold a closed trial over allegations that the estranged mother of his daughter breached a nondisclosure agreement (NDA).
The Plaintiff Went to Great Lengths to Protect His Identity
This newest development could soon expose the reclusive billionaire to the type of public attention he spent the last year trying to avoid. The winner, referred to in court documents as John Doe, alleges that his ex-girlfriend, referred to under the moniker of Sara Smith, violated an NDA by telling his father, and potentially others, about his lottery windfall.
The secretive individual went to great lengths to conceal his identity after purchasing the winning ticket in January 2022, including claiming his prize through a Delaware-based LLC to sidestep public disclosure requirements. Although Maine law permits winners to remain anonymous, Doe’s court action has ironically placed him at the epicenter of an ongoing legal drama.
Adding another complication to the case, Smith, described in court documents as an emergency room nurse from Dracut, Massachusetts, has leveled a serious complaint of her own. She alleges that the entire lawsuit is a ruse to pressure her into giving up custody of their daughter. Her attorneys are adamant that the case is meritless and call on Doe to withdraw the case voluntarily.
A Swift Resolution Is Not in the Cards
According to a recent Portland Press Herald report, in a sharp rebuke issued last Thursday, US District Judge John Woodcock denied Doe’s motion to close the courtroom to the public during trial proceedings, pointing out that the plaintiff’s newfound wealth was not a sufficient reason for restricting public access to a civil trial. Woodcock also noted that Doe’s wealth gave him access to privacy protections unavailable to the general public.
“He fears his newfound wealth will make him the target of an inquisitive and occasionally malevolent people. However, a party’s wealth alone is not a legitimate reason to restrict the right of public access.”

Meanwhile, Doe’s attorneys argue he faces a privacy paradox. He must go to court to protect his confidentiality. However, in doing so, he risks exposing the very information he seeks to protect. Nevertheless, the judge’s ruling means that, unless overturned on appeal, John Doe may be publicly unmasked during live proceedings.
Doe has filed an official appeal to the newest ruling, further protracting the lengthy legal battle. This case adds another entry to the growing list of exciting stories surrounding massive lottery jackpots, demonstrating how financial freedom often comes with unexpected complications. Despite his newfound wealth, the unfolding drama has cost Doe dearly, leading to a significant fallout with family and friends.
