Nevada Gov. Says No to Daily Room Cleaning Bill Proposal

Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo said he would veto SB360 meant to reinstate a daily room cleaning mandate at Las Vegas hotels

Earlier in the week, we reported on Sen. Lori Rogich’s proposal to bring back daily room cleaning and allow room inspections in Las Vegas hotels

“The Hotel Safety Act” has already hit a brick wall on Wednesday evening when Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo made it clear he won’t show support for SB360.

“I Will Not Sign It”

Lombardo called the bill aimed at reinstating COVID-era room cleaning requirements “no different than the law that was repealed in the last session on a bipartisan basis.”

The governor used a social media post on X to urge lawmakers to drop the proposal. “I encourage the Legislature to disregard the bill because I will not sign it.”, the post said.

This marks the first bill the governor has openly vowed to veto this session, reinforcing his stance that he will only approve legislation that expands school choice

Lombardo has an impressive record that counts 75 vetoes in 2023, which could turn his latest remarks into an indicator that the current legislative session may see additional bills get rejected.

Fighting Off Nevada’s Illegal Cannabis Market

In an interview for The Nevada Independent at the start of last month, Rogich explained her intention to use the measure as a means of also addressing the illicit cannabis market.

On Thursday, following Lombardo’s late-night X post, Rogich acknowledged his opposition but reiterated her “steadfast”, unwavering commitment “to addressing the illicit cannabis market, unregulated intoxicating hemp products, and the pervasive issue of sex trafficking.”

She also went on to suggest that the bill “was not set in stone” and could be changed to address those topics in particular.

The legal cannabis industry has been struggling with declining revenue, often addressing the problem of lax enforcement against the unregulated market.

In the Silver State, individuals can only consume cannabis in private residences or designated lounges. However, illicit public use continues to be a widespread issue.

Ongoing Debate Over Room Cleaning Policies

The debate over room cleaning policies in Sin City hotels has been controversial over the years.

In 2023, SB441, a bill backed by the resort industry, ended pandemic-era daily cleaning mandates despite opposition from the Culinary Workers Union Local 226

However, during months-long contract negotiations with major Las Vegas resorts, the union successfully reinstated daily room cleaning provisions into agreements lasting until 2028.

As the Nevada Resort Association is getting ready to push back against the new bill, the Culinary Union has voiced strong support, thanking Rogich for her efforts.
