Ontario Celebrates Three Years of iGaming as Growth Continues
Ontario iGaming’s success story was praised by Paul Burns, president and chief executive officer of the Canadian Gaming Association

The Canadian province of Ontario has celebrated three years of regulated online casino gaming. The province launched online gambling on April 4, 2022, and has since expanded the market.
Ontario iGaming Continues to Grow
Ontario has had online gaming for three years now, with the total number of operators growing to 49. These companies currently operate a total of 84 gaming platforms, demonstrating the market’s rapid growth following the regulation of gaming.
However, Ontario’s iGaming market wasn’t always so big. At launch, there were 17 licensed websites. Since then, the market has experienced tremendous growth. Experts compared the wagering figures recorded in April 2022 to those in February 2025, highlighting a staggering growth in bets and revenue.
For comparison, Ontarians wagered CAD 1 billion in April 2022, resulting in CAD 43.9 million in non-adjusted GGR. This February, on the other hand, the handle came at CAD 7.1 billion, resulting in CAD 280.1 million in non-adjusted GGR.
A Rising Star in the Gaming Industry
Ontario iGaming’s success story was praised by Paul Burns, president and chief executive officer of the Canadian Gaming Association (CGA). In an official statement, Burns lauded Ontario’s iGaming market as a “rising star in the gaming industry.” He attributed the province’s success to its effective regulation, diverse market adoption and robust consumer protection measures.
Burns discussed the matter further during the 21st episode of The iGaming Show, which is available on YouTube.
Amanda Brewer, senior executive of the CGA, also commented on the matter. In a post on LinkedIn, she wished a happy anniversary to the gaming market, congratulating all of her industry friends and colleagues, the operators, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO), iGaming Ontario, the Canadian Gaming Association, and ministers Downey and Cho.
Brewer said that the joint efforts of everyone involved in the industry allowed the province to create a standout and sustainable market that prioritizes player safety before anything else.
Ours is a market unlike any other, and I couldn’t be prouder for the example we are setting world-wide.
Amanda Brewer, senior executive, CCA
In the meantime, Ontario’s success prompted Albertan lawmakers to likewise consider regulated iGaming. The latter province hopes to launch its own online gaming market in early 2026.
The Ontario Market Continues to Change
Not everything has been smooth for everyone in Ontario iGaming, though. Fitzdares, the UK-based luxury sportsbook and casino operator, recently announced its exit from the province, effective as of March 31, 2025.
Fitzdares officials thanked everyone who has trusted the brand over the years but noted that the highly competitive local market has made the brand’s operation unsustainable.
Last November, lawmakers advanced the iGaming Ontario Act. This legislation seeks to end the parent-subsidiary relationship between the AGCO and iGaming Ontario, transforming the latter into a standalone entity governed by an independent board.
Around the same time, a study warned of the adverse effects of iGaming’s growth.
