Police Arrest Human Traffickers Who Laundered Money Via Canadian Casinos

Canadian authorities have arrested two people as part of a crackdown on a human trafficking operation that laundered money via casinos across the country. The two have been charged with various offenses, with one of them remaining in custody.

Victims Helped the Authorities with the Investigation

On April 17, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) announced that its Human Trafficking Unit (HTU) in Nova Scotia had charged two people with 19 offenses related to human trafficking and financial crimes. The authorities understood that the human trafficking operation affected multiple victims in the province and laundered its proceeds via casinos in several provinces.

The investigation kicked off in 2023 when the HTU caught wind of a sex trafficking operation in Nova Scotia. In addition to having multiple victims, the operation funneled its criminal proceeds through casinos in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Ontario, the Forensic Accounting Management Group (FAMG) understood.

Sergeant Jeff MacFarlane of the HTU emphasized that the priority is to ensure the safety of the victims and provide them with appropriate resources as the investigation continues. He noted that the victims have played a key role in putting together evidence to support charges against the operators of the trafficking ring.

Addressing this issue requires a united effort, and we recognize the strength and courage of the victims who came forward to support this investigation. Their cooperation helped dismantle a sex trafficking network and protect others from being victimized.

Two People Were Arrested, One of Whom Remains in Custody

In its official release, the RCMP said that the two people arrested as part of the operation included a 49-year-old man and a 43-year-old woman. The two were taken into custody on April 10 during a traffic stop on Highway 102 near Milford in an operation that was supported by the Halifax Regional Police.

The man was identified as a resident of Porters Lake. He was charged with 13 offenses, including trafficking in persons, material benefit from sexual services, withholding or destroying documents, and laundering proceeds of crime. His first court appearance was at Dartmouth Provincial Court on April 13 and, as of the time of this writing, he still remains in custody.

The woman, on the other hand, is a resident of Chester Basin who was arrested for similar human trafficking and criminal proceeds-related offenses. However, she was released on the condition of appearing in court at a later date.

The RCMP concluded that the investigation into the broader human trafficking operation continues.
