The rules of the 2024 Euro say that the runners-up group in Groups A and B are meant to lock horns in the Round of 16. The Swiss finished second in Group A, with just two points fewer than Germany. It could’ve been different, but the Germans managed to snatch a point from the Swiss with the equalizer in stoppage time.
Over in Group B, the Italians finished below Spain, but above Croatia. They denied the Croats a win in the 8th minute of stoppage time, thus securing the second spot. However, it wasn’t a great performance by Luciano Spalletti’s men, which is something that needs to worry them ahead of the game in Berlin.

Switzerland Looking Really Tough at the Euros
Even though the Swiss conceded a goal in each game they’ve played so far at the Euros, their defense looked really solid. Their midfielders have also been doing a great job and so has their offense.
Even though their attacking department didn’t look too scary before the start of the tournament, these guys have scored five goals already. That’s a decent achievement given that they played against defensive-minded Hungary and Scotland, as well as against mighty Germany, which is one of the top favorites to win the Euros.
In fact, in the game against Germany, Switzerland’s offense causes some big problems for Germany’s defense. Bologna’s forward Dan Ndoye scored their only goal in the match, but he got himself in a few other opportunities to score.
Breel Embolo, who entered the game in the second half, also had a great game. At moments, he posed a real threat to Germany’s goal.
Italy Without Their Star Defender on July 1
Riccardo Calafiori has been one of Italy’s best players at the Euros. In fact, the center-back was the one to assist Mattia Zaccagni for the equalizer in the final seconds of the game. But he will miss the game with Switzerland after picking up two yellow cards – one against Albania and one against Croatia.
Is he going to be missed? Probably. It’s because Spalletti doesn’t have too many elite center-backs at his disposal. Alessandro Bastoni will play for certain, but who will be his partner in the center of the defensive line?
We think it’s going to be Gianluca Mancini. He’s big and strong, but he might not have the pace to keep up with Switzerland’s forwards.
Switzerland vs. Italy Prediction
This is going to be a very close game, which we suspect might last for longer than 90 minutes. That said, a draw in regulation looks like a very good bet.
