The Jockey Club, the largest group in British horseracing, announced the appointment of industry heavyweight Jim Mullen as its new group chief executive officer. The current interim CEO will remain on board to ensure a smooth transition of responsibilities.
According to the announcement, Mullen joins The Jockey Club from Reach, the largest commercial news publisher in the UK and Ireland, which runs some 120 publishing brands. Mullen has served as Reach’s CEO since 2019 and has years of corporate experience.
The CEO Appointee Is a Fervent Racing Fan
Mullen is no stranger to the racing industry. He was described as a horseracing fan and racehorse owner, making him perfect for the role. Prior to that, he spent some time in the gaming sector, serving as managing director of Ladbrokes Digital and COO of William Hill Online.
His earlier experience includes time as digital strategy director and director of product management at News International. He also spent some time as director of digital at Publicis Group.
He is set to step in as The Jockey Club’s new group CEO on June 1. He will also remain a board member of Racecourse Media Group, an umbrella organization that owns media rights for 71 racecourses across Britain and Ireland.
In his new position, Mullen will replace interim group CEO Charlie Boss. Boss became temporary chief executive shortly after Nevin Truesdale’s departure from the organization. The former vowed to continue as interim CEO until Mullen takes up his new post in June. He will continue to serve The Jockey Club until July, ensuring a smooth transition.
Mullen Hopes to Open an Exciting New Chapter
Jim Mullen commented on his appointment, praising The Jockey Club as “one of the most prestigious and established organizations in British sport,” as well as a “forward-thinking and exciting business.”
As a lifelong horseracing fan who has spent some of the best days of my life on racecourses, I could not be more proud to join The Jockey Club’s passionate and dedicated team through what I hope will be an exciting new chapter.

Jim will bring with him a wealth of experience and expertise, while also being a racing fan at heart who is passionate about promoting the sport and the incredible experiences we are able to offer our customers.
