The United Kingdom’s Gaming Commission (UKGC) announced that it is looking for a head of illegal markets. This comes as Great Britain continues to face increasing pressures from illegal gambling operators.
The Head of Illegal Markets Will Assist in Combating Illegal Gambling
The UK regulator described the position as a full-time job with a salary of £65,000 per year. A part-time option where the employee is available at least 30 hours a week also seems to be on the table.
The UKGC clarified that the job location will be hybrid, with regular travel to Birmingham, and warned that it will require overnight stays. Additionally, the role will be barred from playing the National Lottery.
In this new role, the successful candidate will be responsible for shaping the UKGC’s response to illegal gambling. They will work with the Operations Directorate to coordinate and direct resources from the Enforcement and Intelligence functions. At the same time, the head of illegal markets will work closely with the Illegal Markets, Sports Betting Integrity Unit, Legal, Policy, Strategy, and Communications Teams. The role will report directly to the Director of Enforcement and Intelligence.
The UKGC emphasized that the position is a high-profile one where the candidate would be regularly exposed to external shareholders and agency leaders. The addition of the role aligns with the commission’s broader strategy to combat illegal gambling and ensure a healthier gaming ecosystem.

The UKGC described its perfect candidate as someone with strong leadership skills, broad technical knowledge, experience working with legal teams, and a discerning eye for the impact of various strategies.
Additionally, the UKGC added that SIO, CPIA, PACE or POCA qualifications, as well as experience with covert authorities and illegal markets disruption, and understanding of the gaming sector are desirable qualities.
Individuals interested in the role should apply by May 24, 2026, the UKGC said. Interviews are expected to be held from June 5 to 9.
