UNLV Rejects Circa’s $100,000 Offer to Retain Quarterback Sluka
Sluka, who moved to the University of Nevada-Las Vegas from Holy Cross, stated that the university's inability to honor a verbal commitment for a $100,000 name, image, and likeness (NIL) payment was the main reason for his decision to leave

UNLV recently turned down an offer from Circa Resort & Casino to pay $100,000 to keep quarterback Matthew Sluka on the team after he announced his decision to redshirt the rest of the 2024 season.
Quarterback Matthew Sluka Leaves UNLV Amid NIL Dispute
Sluka, who transferred to the University of Nevada-Las Vegas from Holy Cross, cited the university’s failure to fulfill a verbal agreement for a $100,000 name, image, and likeness (NIL) payment as the primary reason for his departure. Despite efforts from Circa CEO Derek Stevens and Vice President of Operations Mike Palm to intervene and cover the payment, UNLV declined the offer, stating that Sluka had already made his decision to leave.
Sluka’s agent, Marcus Cromartie, revealed that the NIL payment had been initially promised by an unnamed assistant coach during recruitment. Sluka’s transfer to UNLV had brought high hopes for the team’s success, especially after their strong start to the 2024 season, which included victories over two Big 12 teams. The quarterback’s decision to sit out the rest of the season and enter the transfer portal came as a shock to the team and fans alike.
In an attempt to keep Sluka in a UNLV uniform, Circa Sports, a prominent supporter of Las Vegas sports, stepped in with a $100,000 offer, reported The Las Vegas Review-Journal. Palm, reflecting on the situation, mentioned that he and Stevens believed it was worth the financial effort to maintain UNLV’s playoff aspirations, as the team had a solid chance to qualify for the expanded College Football Playoff. However, the university quickly responded that Sluka’s departure was final, and any potential deal was off the table.
UNLV’s Sluka Departure Sparks Discussion on NIL Issues
While the offer did not prevent Sluka’s exit, the move was viewed as a smart public relations strategy by Circa. The resort and casino chain, known for its support of local sports, demonstrated its commitment to the community and its hopes for UNLV’s continued success under head coach Barry Odom. UNLV has experienced a revival in recent years, and its 3-0 start this season added to the growing local excitement around the team.
Sluka’s case has drawn attention to the challenges posed by the NIL system, which was introduced by the NCAA three years ago. NIL compensation has become a major factor in recruiting and transferring, creating a highly competitive environment for schools. Sluka’s experience at UNLV, where he claims promises were made but not upheld, underscores the importance of ensuring that financial commitments are honored in the rapidly evolving world of college sports.
